Marc "Sparky" Rutherford Interview

return

22 April, 1999-2003

The BeastMaster fan club would not be half of what it is without Sparky's contribution.  He is an amazing man and Australia's greatest asset.  The BMFC is proud to have our first interview with him.

BMFC:

What are your duties on the set of BeastMaster? Describe a typical day.

Sparky:

That would be telling!!!! But basically, I just sort out anything Daniel Goddard needs. The day normally starts around 5am when I pick up DG and drive him to the set and finishes when I drop him home that night. But most times after talking on the way home, I'm doing more work (emails, fan pictures and letters, etc) when I get home. I actually prefer working at night without interruptions from the production office.

BMFC:

How did you get your start in the entertainment business?

Sparky:

Front of house and Monitor Engineer for various acts including The Supremes, The Temptations, The Black Sorrows, Gangajang, Yothu Yindi, The Cruel Sea, Tumbleweed, Ricky May, Digger Revell, Les Mis (G.C.A.C. & T.S.S. Productions), John Rowles, Paul Kelly, You Am I......... Toured Malaysia, Taiwan and The Philippines as Senior Audio Engineer and Production Manager for Walt Disney Special Events.

BMFC:

Have you worked on other TV shows or movies? If so, what? And what was your favorite gig?

Sparky:

I've only worked on a few other films. After working with bands, then doing sound in theatre, I think film/tv moves a little slow for me. My favourite gig is always "The Offspring" or "Big Day Out" (www.bigdayout.com). Apart from the fact I like the music, you just can't beat the feeling you get when 10,000 - 40,000 fans are screaming and the music starts pumping.

BMFC:

How do you think the show has changed, if at all, since it first began filming?
Sparky:

I've probably only seen about 8 finished episodes and a few almost finished eps, so it's hard to say. I really enjoy the eps I've seen and always love the lines Steven Grives has (like: bring him to me and I'll kill him myself!).

BMFC:

Give us your thoughts on the cast of BeastMaster. Who's the funniest guy or girl? The most serious?
Sparky:

I thought I was the funniest!!!! That's another tough question. Probably Shane Warren (main unit 2nd AD) or Monika. As for serious, mmmmmmmm, I don't take any of them seriously, haha, but I'm sure there's quite a few people like that.

BMFC:

What do you like best about your job? What would you change if you could?

Sparky:

I think I'm pretty lucky to have the job as P.A. The best thing is being able to work on my own. I know what has to be done, so it's like being my own boss. Even though BeastMaster keeps me busy for about 70 hours/week, I can do most of it from my office at home. The only thing I'd change is the money.
